How we build a campsite at 11,000 ft

Tashi Dolma Aug 2025 5 min

Tent platforms, kitchen tents, waste pits — the 4-hour ritual that turns a meadow into home.

A good campsite isn't found, it's built. Here's the playbook our staff follows the moment we arrive at a new camp.

Step 1 — Read the wind

Tents go behind a windbreak — a boulder, a ridge, a stand of pines. Never on an exposed ridge top, no matter how good the view.

Step 2 — Kitchen downwind

The kitchen tent is always 30m downwind of sleeping tents. Smoke, smells and food scraps stay away from where you sleep.

Step 3 — Leave no trace

Every campsite is dug, used, refilled and seeded. We carry out every gram of trash — including kitchen waste.
